Clay Cockrell, LCSW, is a New York psychotherapist and co-founder of CoupleWork AI, where he applies more than 30 years of clinical experience to relationship coaching. His central concern is that conversational AI can intensify conflict by flattering users, overlooking danger, and treating intimate disclosures like ordinary consumer data.
Raised in eastern Kentucky, Cockrell studied psychology at Asbury College and earned a master’s degree from the University of Kentucky. His early work included adolescent substance-abuse treatment and psychiatric emergency care at University of Cincinnati Hospital. He moved to New York in 1997 and established a private practice.
Cockrell founded Walk and Talk Therapy, conducting psychotherapy sessions in Central Park, and later founded and exited The Online Counseling Directory, which connected clients with virtual therapists. He also created The Scary Money Podcast, focused on the psychological complications of wealth. His clinical approach draws on cognitive behavioral therapy; his writing about long-term relationships emphasizes repair, emotional safety, and the risks of delaying help until destructive patterns harden.
At CoupleWork, which he co-founded with Tony Fabrikant, Cockrell helped shape Maxine, an AI relationship coach informed by the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and attachment theory. The goal is accessible, timely coaching that remains distinct from licensed clinical treatment.
