Justin McCarty

Justin McCarty is an entrepreneur and operations leader who co-founded Bungalow and Ionic Commerce, building businesses around shared housing, digital marketplaces, and software agents capable of completing commercial transactions. His recent work applies AI to the operational challenges behind leasing, revenue management, and customer communication.

A U.S. Army veteran, McCarty worked in business operations at Uber and held a leadership role at food-delivery company Sprig before co-founding Bungalow with Andrew Collins. As the housing company’s chief operating officer and later president, he helped build a marketplace that connected homeowners with renters, furnished shared homes, and used both direct leases and homeowner revenue-sharing arrangements. McCarty subsequently co-founded Ionic Commerce and served as its chief executive when he introduced the company at AI Engineer World’s Fair 2024. Ionic developed agentic commerce infrastructure that enables software agents to interpret merchant inventory, identify products suited to individual shoppers, and complete purchases through a unified API.

• Product data should support decisions, not clicks. Conventional advertising feeds often omit availability, precise specifications, shipping details, and other information agents need. Ionic enriched merchant catalogs with reviews, editorial context, and product attributes, making that information available in structured, vector, and graph-oriented formats.

• Discovery and checkout form one transaction. McCarty’s agent-commerce demonstration combined personalized product selection with payment-token checkout, allowing agents to complete purchases without sending customers between separate storefronts.

• Merchant-funded monetization can finance consumer AI. When an agent helps match customers with suitable products, merchants can pay for resulting sales instead of requiring consumers to maintain another subscription. Better attribution also helps brands understand how product information influences automated recommendations and purchasing decisions.

• Production agents need operational safeguards. McCarty’s production-agent writing uses Lisa, an AI leasing agent, to explore orchestrated specialist agents, typed interfaces, confidence-based escalation, risk-calibrated human review, and graduated deployment for real-estate operations.
