Quinn Slack

Quinn Slack is the co-founder and chief executive of Amp, the coding-agent company, and the co-founder and former chief executive of Sourcegraph, the enterprise code-search business. His career traces the evolution of developer tools from searching unfamiliar codebases to building AI systems that can understand, modify, and evaluate software.

Slack started programming at nine by building a website for his brother’s baseball team. He studied computer science at Stanford, became the first employee and engineer at Bleacher Report, and later worked as a forward-deployed engineer at Palantir, embedded with JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. He also co-founded the lending-technology company Blend. His account of learning to code connects those early experiences to his support for expanding access to programming and his involvement with Hack Club.

In 2013, Slack co-founded Sourcegraph with Beyang Liu to make large, distributed codebases easier to search and understand. His early writing on founder conviction describes the tension between pursuing an initially unpopular idea and responding to genuine customer feedback. As Sourcegraph grew, he documented its engineering practices and built a business around helping teams navigate software spread across repositories.

That code-search foundation informed Cody, Sourcegraph’s coding assistant, which used organizational codebase context for autocomplete, inline editing, test generation, and questions about unfamiliar software. Slack focused on whether AI assistance could locate the right code, propose useful changes, and make its answers straightforward for developers to verify.

• Codebase context as an evaluation system. Slack’s context-first approach treats source code, documentation, tests, execution results, and operational signals as information agents need both to generate changes and to determine whether those changes work.

• Daily adoption over AI hype. His AI Engineer World’s Fair presentation distinguishes recurring developer usage from favorable surveys, paid subscriptions, viral attention, and occasional experimentation. He regards internal dogfooding, sustained engagement, and customer renewals as stronger evidence that a product delivers value.

• Verification cost determines product value. Autocomplete works partly because developers encounter suggestions frequently and can assess them quickly. Longer answers, larger edits, and autonomous workflows impose heavier review costs, making inspectable context, editable suggestions, and familiar development environments essential.

• Focused agent handoffs. Amp’s Handoff workflow starts a new task-oriented thread with relevant files and an editable prompt instead of repeatedly compressing an expanding conversation. Slack helped explain the team-developed feature with colleague Nicolay Gerold.

• Broad access to powerful models. In his argument for freedom of intelligence, Slack opposes government restrictions that concentrate access to advanced AI while distinguishing private model-release decisions from existing prohibitions on criminal conduct.

In December 2025, Sourcegraph and Amp became independent companies. Dan Adler became Sourcegraph’s chief executive, while Slack and Liu launched Amp Frontier Corporation to pursue advanced coding agents; Slack remained on Sourcegraph’s board. As Amp’s chief executive and a member of its technical staff, he continues building software himself while developing tools intended to change how engineering teams work.
